Marbofloxacin CAS No. 115550-35-1

Category: Drugs and drug intermediates

Product Description

Marbofloxacin is a third-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic widely used in veterinary medicine for treating a variety of bacterial infections in dogs and cats. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for DNA replication and transcription, thereby preventing bacterial growth and causing cell death. This broad-spectrum antibiotic is effective against both Gram-negative and some Gram-positive bacteria, including common pathogens like Pasteurella, Staphylococcus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas. Available in tablet and injectable forms, marbofloxacin is typically administered once daily at a dosage of 2–4 mg/kg, depending on the infection. It is well-absorbed orally with a bioavailability of over 90% in dogs and has a half-life of approximately 12–14 hours, facilitating convenient once-daily dosing. However, it should be used with caution due to potential side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy, and more serious risks like cartilage damage in young animals and central nervous system disorders. It is contraindicated in growing animals and those with existing CNS issues. Marbofloxacin should not be given with calcium, iron, or aluminum-containing products, as these can interfere with its absorption. While it is licensed for veterinary use in many countries, it is not approved for human use.
