Chemical substance description

4-Methylmethylphenidate (4-Me-TMP) is a synthetic stimulant and a structural analog of methylphenidate, commonly known as Ritalin. It is classified as a New Psychoactive Substance (NPS) and typically appears as a colorless oil. Structurally, it features a methyl group substituted at the 4-position of the phenyl ring, which may alter its potency, selectivity, and duration of action compared to methylphenidate. Pharmacologically, 4-Me-TMP likely acts as a dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (DNRI), similar to methylphenidate, but its efficacy in blocking dopamine reuptake is relatively low despite high binding affinity. It has been investigated as a potential substitute for treating stimulant abuse but carries significant risks, including cardiovascular strain, dependence, and potential neurotoxicity. Adverse effects may include tachycardia, hypertension, irritability, paranoia, and anxiety, with additional risks identified in in silico studies, such as acute toxicity affecting the gastrointestinal system and lungs, skin irritation, and cardiotoxicity. Legally, 4-Me-TMP is not explicitly scheduled in the United States but may fall under the Federal Analogue Act if intended for human consumption. It has been banned in the UK as a Temporary Class Drug since June 2015 and is classified as Schedule III in Canada and Class B in the UK.

Legal Status:

  • United States: Not explicitly scheduled but may be considered illegal under the Federal Analogue Act.

  • United Kingdom: Banned as a Temporary Class Drug.

  • Other Jurisdictions: Legal status varies; may be regulated under analog laws in some countries.
