EDT-20—formally N,N′,N′-Polyoxyethylene (10)-N-tallow-1,3-diaminopropane, also listed as PEG-10 tallow aminopropylamine (CAS 61790-85-0)—is a dark-amber, viscous liquid surfactant prepared by grafting an average of ten ethylene-oxide units onto a tallow-fatty (C14–C18) dipropylenetriamine backbone. The molecule behaves as a pH-responsive hybrid: cationic and strongly surface-active in acidic media, yet essentially non-ionic at neutral to alkaline pH. This dual character, together with an HLB around 12–14, makes EDT-20 an effective emulsifier, dispersant, wetting agent and corrosion inhibitor in both aqueous and non-aqueous systems. It is widely formulated into agrochemical concentrates to improve pesticide spreading and adhesion, serves as a softener and antistat in textile finishing, acts as a corrosion inhibitor and emulsifier in metal-working fluids and oilfield chemicals, and appears—albeit in limited use because of mild irritation potential—in hair conditioners and industrial hand cleaners. Water-soluble and moderately biodegradable, it must nevertheless be handled with gloves and eye protection: the neat material is corrosive to skin and eyes, harmful if swallowed, and toxic to aquatic organisms.

Synthesis

• Starting material: Hydrogenated tallow fatty acids → tallow alkylamine

• Reaction sequence:

  1. Tallow alkylamine + propylene diamine → tallow alkyl-1,3-propanediamine
